What is MIG Welding?
MIG welding is a process of joining metal pieces by melting and adding filler metal, such as MIG wire or rod, to create metallic joints. It is a process by which the operator uses a gas-shielded electric arc to heat and melt an area of metal to be joined into a molten puddle that flows freely over the joint to create a permanent bond that usually requires no further work or finishing. The filler metal is drawn into the joint by an electric current that passes through the wire, and the rate at which it melts is controlled by the welder.
Since its introduction in 1941, MIG welding has become one of the most common industrial welding techniques in heavy industry. It was developed to fulfill a need for a process that could adequately weld aluminum alloys, which had previously required other methods. This often took longer due to aluminium’s lower melting point.
In recent years, MIG welding has become a more popular option for industrial trades for joining metal pieces. The system is excellent for heavy duty industrial welding projects because it can readily reach its operating temperature quickly, a significant advantage in high volume industrial production environments.
